Ultra-running vs. ultra-cycling. Are they for you?

On paper, ultra-running and ultra-cycling share a lot of DNA. Both demand an iron stomach, a bizarre relationship with pain, and the ability to keep moving when every fiber of your being is screaming at you to lie down in a ditch. But in reality, they are completely different sports. 

The divide comes down to physics. Running is a brutal, high-impact battle against gravity. Cycling is a sweeping chess match against distance, sleep deprivation, and mechanical failure. 

The Physical Toll: Blown Quads vs. Nerve Damage 

The most obvious difference is how your body breaks down. 

When you run an ultra, your joints take a relentless, rhythmic beating. Every single step sends a shockwave up your legs. The real killer, though, is the downhills. Running downhill forces your muscles to lengthen under load, which essentially shreds your muscle fibers on a microscopic level. By mile 70 of a 100-mile trail race, your quads can feel like they’ve been hit with a cricket bat, and your knees can feel like they're filled with broken glass. 

Cycling is non-weight-bearing, so you don't get that same violent muscle destruction. Because of this, ultra-cyclists can keep going for thousands of miles, rather than hundreds. But the bike extracts its own tax. Instead of blown-out muscles, cyclists deal with friction and compression. You’re looking at agonizing saddle sores, pinched nerves in your hands that can leave your fingers numb for weeks, feet so sore you could cry and a back and neck which be stiff like you've never know before!

Mental Space: The Drifting Mind vs. High-Speed Focus 

The mental experience of these two sports is night and day, largely because of the speed involved. 

When you're running, you're moving relatively slowly. Even on flat ground, your pace is a fraction of a cyclist's, and when you hit a steep, muddy mountain climb, you're basically power-walking. This slow pace gives your brain a lot of room to breathe. You can zone out, look at the scenery, and let your thoughts drift. It’s almost meditative. The exception is when you are in a mountain event and downhill is wet and rocky, making the chance of an accident much higher!

You don't get that luxury on a bike. Even during a casual ultra-endurance pace, you are moving fast. Descending a winding mountain pass at 3:00 AM on a loaded bike requires absolute, hyper-focused concentration. Hit a pothole, misjudge a corner, or fail to spot a patch of gravel, and the consequences are catastrophic. Your brain is constantly scanning for hazards, meaning the cognitive load is incredibly draining. You can't just zone out, or you'll crash. That isn't even taking into account the cars on the road!

Logistics: Minimalist Purity vs. The Jigsaw Puzzle 

If you love gear, you belong on a bike. If you hate it, stick to running shoes. 

Ultra-running is beautifully simple. You need a good pair of shoes, a hydration vest, some calories, and a headlamp. If your headlamp dies or a shoelace snaps, it's annoying, but you can usually hobble your way to the next aid station. You are the engine and the vehicle. 

Ultra-cycling—especially self-supported bikepacking races like the Transcontinental—is a huge logistical challenge. You aren't just an athlete; you’re a mechanic, a navigator, and an electronics manager. If your freehub fails, your tyre side-wall tears open, or your electronic shifting dies in the middle of a remote mountain range, your race is over unless you can fix it yourself. Cyclists have to obsess over aerodynamics, battery life for GPS units, route tracking, and packing just enough gear to survive a freezing night without carrying too much extra weight. 

Sleep

Most 100-mile runners finish within 24 to 30 hours, pushing through on pure adrenaline. They will suffer with extreme tiredness but will mostly not need to sleep during the race. Once the race length goes beyond 150 miles then sleeping becomes a necessity and can make or break a good performance depending on how well it is performed. The key is not getting too tired when there is no opportunity to sleep for quite a while. Hallucinations, bad decision making and painfully slow pacing can make things more on the type 2 side of fun! 

In multi-day cycling races, sleep is the ultimate tactical weapon. Because the bike is a highly efficient machine, your body doesn't fall apart right away, allowing you to ride for days on end. This creates a dangerous game of chicken with sleep deprivation. Top riders will often cycle for 36 hours straight before taking a 90-minute nap in a bivvy bag on the side of the road. Ride too long, and the vivid hallucinations start. Cyclists routinely talk about seeing imaginary buildings across the road or holding conversations with people who aren't there—all while trying to stay upright on a moving bicycle. 

Caveat

I am generalising regarding what ultra running and cycling events are. I myself have ran a multi-day ultra that was 64 stages/days long and 5 days as a single stage event, so sleep deprivation can very much be a huge part of running events. The majority of ultra running races though, are 100 miles and below. 

The Verdict 

Neither sport is objectively "harder." 

Ultra-running is a concentrated dose of physical punishment. It’s a test of how much raw abuse your musculoskeletal system can take before it breaks. 

Ultra-cycling is a grand, sprawling test of endurance, intellect, and problem-solving. It’s about managing a machine, a route, and your own mind over massive expanses of time and space. 

Could you do it?

If you are an experienced ultra runner and are considering a cycling event, or vice versa, you definitely have a head start over people who haven't tried either. There is more to learn with cycling. Mostly about the bike and how to maintain it, which is suitable for you, What type of bags to carry, how you are going to power and charge your lights, GPS etc. If you are coming from a background of cycling and are new to running though, the initial part is training very easily and building very gradually as your ligaments and muscles adapt to this new high impact activity. This can be difficult if you are starting with a high level of fitness, but if it is not respected, the chance of picking up an injury is much higher!

Where both sports are the same though is they offer the chance to have an incredible adventure, pushing yourself further than you ever thought possible!
